The 62nd Austin Trail of Lights returns to Zilker Park December 10 through 23. It still has seven free nights and seven paid ones, but they fall on different dates than last year. That matters on Barton Springs Road and Stratford Drive because the shuttle from Toney Burger Activity Center runs only on paid nights. Last year, the City also built its street-closure plan around shuttle and non-shuttle nights.
So if you live near the park, the date that changes your December is the shuttle date, more than the free-admission date. Here is the calendar as it stands, with the details that matter most when the Trail sits a short walk from your front door.
The park's holiday run starts in late November, with three separate events before the Trail opens.
The tree is the oldest piece of the run. The City says it was first lit on December 10, 1967. It stands 155 feet tall, with 39 streamers of 81 LED bulbs each, for 3,309 lights. In KVUE's coverage of the tree's 50th lighting, Austin Parks and Recreation's events manager described spinning under the tree as a family tradition.
KXAN's 2025 trip guide listed last year's free nights as December 10 through 12 and 15 through 18, with the shuttle running December 13 and 14 and 19 through 23. The official 2026 dates page splits the season differently.
| 2025 season | 2026 season | |
|---|---|---|
| Free general admission | Dec. 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18 | Dec. 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 |
| Paid general admission | Dec. 13, 14, 19 through 23 | Dec. 12, 18 through 23 |
| Toney Burger shuttle | Dec. 13, 14, 19 through 23 | Dec. 12, 18 through 23 |
| Opening night | Wednesday | Thursday |
Here is how that falls on the 2026 calendar. Saturday, December 12, is paid, with the shuttle running. Sunday the 13th and Monday the 14th are free with no shuttle. The paid stretch begins one day earlier than last year, on Friday the 18th, and runs straight through Wednesday the 23rd.
On paid nights, general admission is $8 for ages 12 and up, and children 11 and under get in free with a ticketed adult. The $10 shuttle pass includes general admission, and parking at the Burger Center is free. H-E-B, which powers the Trail, said in the September 30 announcement that it is helping keep seven nights free for the community.
The shuttle line in that table matters to Zilker residents because the City's 2025 street-closure document grouped Trail nights the same way. One set of closures covered the non-shuttle dates, December 10 through 12 and 15 through 18. A second set covered the shuttle dates, December 13 and 14 and 19 through 23.
The streets themselves will be familiar to anyone who lived through last December:
The 2025 closure hours differed between shuttle and non-shuttle nights, and the City's own event page and its closure document list those hours in opposite order. The Trail's FAQ says the 2026 street-closure schedule is "coming soon." Until it's posted, the 2025 pattern is the best guide to which streets to expect. The exact hours are the part to confirm once the 2026 plan is out.
If the 2026 plan keeps the 2025 structure, the closure calendar moves with the shuttle. That would put Saturday the 12th in the shuttle group, take Sunday the 13th and Monday the 14th out of it, and make the full run from Friday the 18th to the 23rd the longest shuttle stretch of the season.
The Trail's planning page says parking is prohibited in the surrounding Zilker Park area and Rollingwood neighborhoods, and that public safety personnel enforce it. Close-in parking requires a pass bought online in advance, with nothing sold onsite. Parking access opens at 5:30 p.m., and drivers are told to follow the directions on their pass rather than GPS.
If you live close enough to walk, here's the layout:
If you have guests driving in, the Trail also lists One Texas Center at 505 Barton Springs Road as an alternate parking option.
Inside the gate, the route mostly follows the paved Lou Neff Road path. The official event map on the site still carries a 2025 file label. The September announcement promises more than 2 million lights, 96 illuminated trees, and more than 70 displays and lighted tunnels. The food and drink vendor list is still marked "coming soon."
ZIP passes, presented by Perry Homes, cost $20 to $25. They give you entry at 6 p.m. and access to the Zilker Lounge for cookies and cocoa, even on free nights. Platinum passes, tied to Northern Trust, are $95.
The Barton Springs Road Bridge replacement is still in design and environmental review, and the City expects construction to begin in late 2028. The City's current Zilker closure notice covers the annual Great Lawn maintenance through October and the usual partial closure during the Trail of Lights. It doesn't list a separate construction project that would change Trail operations this year.
From Friday, December 18, the shuttle runs every night through Wednesday the 23rd, the final night of the season.
If you're thinking about listing a Zilker home this winter, the Trail calendar affects when you can schedule showings, open houses, and contractor visits. As a longtime Barton Hills resident, I can help you plan a listing timeline around the shuttle nights and the 2026 closure schedule once the City posts it.
